What Is Poker?

Poker is a gambling card game with lots of variations. In some types of poker all the cards are concealed, in others only some cards are hidden. Typically, the role of dealer rotates among players, and is indicated by a "dealer button" or a "buck." In a casino, the house provides the dealer at all times, but a "button" is rotated among the players to indicate the order of betting. Players submit their bets to the "pot," and then aim to win the whole pot by getting the best combination of cards in their hand, or by out-betting their competitors.

How to Play Poker — Basic 5-Card Poker

The first poker game that many players learn is 5-card draw. Five-card poker is the standard Poker model, and understanding it gives you a basis to understand other Poker games as well. At the beginning of the game, players may place a "blind wager", essentially betting before they even get cards in their hands. The dealer gives all players 5 cards, face down. After seeing the cards, players must place a wager to stay in the game. Then the draw begins, and players may exchange any number of cards with the dealer, in order to try to get a better hand. In order to stay in the game, all players must place another bet. If all the players stay in the game, there is a "showdown" and the player with the best hand wins. If only one player sticks it out, and stays in, he wins the whole pot without having to show his cards.

What is the Best Hand in Poker? — Understanding Your Cards

Poker hands are ranked in value depending on the combination of cards therein. The following is a list of the best poker hands, in order from best to worst:

1. "Royal Flush" includes an ace, king, queen, jack and ten, all of the same suit.
2. "Straight Flush" is a hand of any five cards, in sequence, of the same suit.
3. "Four of a Kind" is four cards of the same rank (numeric value).
4. "Full House" is a hand with three cards of the same rank and two cards of another rank.
5. "Flush" is five cards of the same suit (not in sequence).
6. "Straight" is five cards in numerical order, but not of the same suit.
7. "Three of a Kind" is three cards of the same rank.
8. "Two pair" is two cards of the same rank, and another two cards of the same rank as each other.
9. "One pair" is two cards of the same rank
10. "High Card" is a hand used only as a last-ditch effort. If all else fails, it is a hand showing five unmatched cards, with one card outranking the others. The highest card at the table wins.

How to Win a Poker Game — Strategy

Deception, in the form of bluffing and slow-playing, is a key element to successful poker playing. A champion poker player cannot get caught up in ethical debates about misleading his competitors, as this is a fundamental element of poker strategy. Poker players try to convince their fellow players to "fold," even with a fairly good hand, by convincing them that their hand is superior. This is called "bluffing." "Slow-playing," or "sandbagging," is another deceptive strategy in Poker. By hesitating, and placing a low bet on a strong hand, you may convince other poker players to bet high, and then win a big pot.

Varieties of Poker Games

There are many varieties of Poker games that are popular. It is important to understand the difference between the games before you sit down to play. Some poker games use 52-card decks, and some include Jokers to be used as wild cards. For example, Draw Poker describes any kind of Poker game in which players are dealt all five cards up front, and replace them in the course of the game to get a superior hand. Three-card Poker is actually a two-part game, including "Pair Plus" and "Ante and Play." The first part requires no skill or strategy. You place your bet, receive your cards, and you are paid out according to the value of your hand. The second part of the game is played against the dealer, and requires strategic decisions on whether to play or to fold.

Pai Gow Poker is a fusion of a Chinese domino game called Pai Gow and the card game of Poker. Players are dealt seven cards and then split them up to play a five-card hand and a two-card hand. The play is against the dealer or "banker." The game includes a ritualistic dice rolling which decides which player gets his hand dealt first.

History of Poker

The origins of Poker is debated among historians of gambling games. The name, "Poker", could be derived from the German word pochen, which means to knock, and in Dutch, means to brag. This was probably via the French word poque, which originated from the German. The game itself is very similar to a Persian game, called as nas, which may have been taught by the Persian sailors to the French in New Orleans.

The 20-card, four-player version of the game was played as early as 1929, as reported by British actor Joseph Crowell. The game spread via Mississippi Riverboat to the remainder of the country. During the Gold Rush, Poker was considered a fundamental part of the frontier culture. The American Civil War and the decades that followed, brought many innovations to the game. Tournament play became trendy in the 1970's after the first World Series of Poker.
